This Privacy Policy explains how TechTown Developers ("we", "us", "our") handles information in Preyu: Screen time limit ("Preyu" or "the app"), an Android app published on Google Play.
Preyu is a digital-wellbeing companion. Cartoon parents (Mom, Dad or both, as you choose) drop by briefly at the edge of your screen to remind you how much time you have spent in the apps you chose, compared with a daily limit you set.
By installing or using Preyu you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the app.
1. Summary
- Your screen-time data stays on your phone. The list of apps you watch, how long you use them, your settings and your history are stored only on your device and are never uploaded to us or anyone else.
- No account, no sign-in, no ads. We do not ask for your real name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, location or payment details.
- We never sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.
- Preyu uses Google Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage statistics (for example "your parents dropped by" or "daily limit changed"). You can turn this off at any time in the app: Settings → Privacy → "Share anonymous usage stats".
- Preyu uses Firebase Cloud Messaging to send occasional news and tips, and Google Play In-App Updates to offer new versions.
- No advertising ID is collected.
2. Information processed only on your device
This information is created and stored only on your device. It is never sent to us, to Google, or to any other third party.
| Information | Why Preyu needs it |
|---|---|
| App usage time (how long each app is in the foreground) | To count the time you spend in the apps you selected and compare it with your daily limit. |
| Which app is currently open | To notice when you open an app you chose to watch, so your parents can react at the right moment. |
| List of installed launcher apps (names and icons) | So you can choose which apps to watch. |
| Your settings | Daily limit, watched apps, who appears (Mom, Dad or both) and how they look, their language, parenting style, an optional name they call you, quiet hours, reminder preferences and the analytics switch. |
| Daily history | Your total time in the watched apps for each of the last 90 days, and streaks, to show your week and progress. Older days are deleted automatically. |
| Short-lived app state | For example "quiet until", reminder timing, and when an update prompt was last declined. |
This data is excluded from Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer. Uninstalling Preyu, or clearing its storage in Android Settings → Apps → Preyu → Storage, deletes all of it permanently.
Sharing a report card is up to you. When you tap Share, Preyu draws the card as an image on your device and hands it to the Android share sheet. It goes only to the app or person you pick there, and Preyu itself uploads nothing.
Preyu cannot read your messages, emails, passwords, browsing history, photos, or anything shown inside other apps. It only knows which app is open and for how long.
3. Information collected and shared off the device
3.1 Firebase Analytics (anonymous usage statistics)
Provider: Google LLC (Firebase).
Purpose: To understand how many people use Preyu and which features help, so we can fix problems and improve the app. It is not used for advertising.
What is sent:
- App interactions (events): opening the app, screens viewed, onboarding steps, permissions granted (yes/no only), the parents appearing or being tapped (with its mood and the reaction type), daily limit reached, quiet mode started or ended, settings changed (daily limit in minutes, who appears, language, parenting style, number of watched apps, on/off switches, quiet-hours times), notifications received or opened, and in-app update steps.
- A daily summary: minutes used in watched apps, your daily limit, whether you stayed under it, and the number of watched apps.
- Settings attached to your app installation: parenting style, who appears (Mom, Dad or both), daily limit, number of watched apps, and whether floating reminders are on.
- Technical information collected automatically by Firebase: an app-instance identifier (a random ID for this installation, not linked to your identity), device model, Android version, app version, language, approximate country or region (derived from your IP address, which Firebase does not store), session start and engagement time, first-open time, and how the app was installed (Google Play install referrer).
Never sent: the names or package names of apps you use or watch, what you do inside any app, anything you type, your contacts, precise location, photos, files, or the Android Advertising ID. Preyu removes the advertising-ID permissions, and ad personalisation signals are disabled.
Your choice: Analytics is on by default and can be turned off at any time in Settings → Privacy → "Share anonymous usage stats". When it is off, no analytics events are sent.
Retention: Event data is kept by Firebase for 2 months (Google Analytics data-retention setting), then deleted. Aggregated, non-identifying reports (for example "1,000 daily users") may be kept longer.

3.2 Firebase Cloud Messaging (push notifications)
Provider: Google LLC (Firebase).
Purpose: To deliver occasional notifications such as tips, news or important announcements about Preyu. Messages are sent to all users of the app, not targeted at you individually.
What is processed: Firebase creates a messaging token (a random identifier for this installation) so that messages can be delivered. We do not link this token to you, and we do not use it for advertising.
Your choice: Turn off the "Updates & tips" notification category for Preyu in Android Settings → Apps → Preyu → Notifications, or turn off all of Preyu's notifications. On Android 13 and newer, Preyu asks for permission before showing any notifications.
3.3 Google Play In-App Updates
Provider: Google LLC (Google Play).
Purpose: To tell you when a new version of Preyu is available and to install it. The check is handled by the Google Play Store app on your device, under Google's Privacy Policy. Preyu itself does not send any data for this.
3.4 Security of data in transit
All data sent to Firebase is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS).
3.5 Sharing
We do not sell, rent or trade any information. Anonymous analytics and messaging data are processed by Google LLC as our service provider, only to provide the services described above. We may disclose information if required by law. Since we hold no personal profile about you, there is very little we could disclose.
4. Permissions and why Preyu uses them
| Permission | What it allows | Why Preyu needs it |
|---|---|---|
Usage access (PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS) | See how long apps are in the foreground | The core feature: counting time in the apps you chose. You grant it yourself in Android Settings, and Preyu explains it before asking. Data stays on your device. |
Display over other apps (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW) | Draw on top of other apps | To show your parents for a few seconds at the edge of the screen, and a soft red glow at your limit. The overlay cannot see, read or capture your screen, and your taps pass through it. |
Foreground service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE) | Keep running with a visible notification | So Preyu can notice when you open a watched app. Android requires the ongoing "Preyu is keeping you company" notification while this runs. |
Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS) | Show notifications | The required status notification, limit reminders, and optional news and tips. |
Run at startup (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED) | Start after the phone restarts | To resume your companion after a reboot, if it was on. |
Internet and network state (INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE) | Use the network | Used only by Firebase Analytics, Firebase Cloud Messaging and Google Play updates, as described above. Your screen-time data is never uploaded. |
Keep awake (WAKE_LOCK) | Briefly keep the processor awake | Used by Firebase to deliver notifications and send analytics reliably. |
Receive push messages (c2dm.permission.RECEIVE) | Receive Firebase messages | To deliver news and tips (section 3.2). |
Install referrer (BIND_GET_INSTALL_REFERRER_SERVICE) | Learn how the app was installed | Used by Firebase Analytics to know whether Preyu came from Google Play (section 3.1). |
App visibility (<queries> for launcher apps) | See apps that appear in your launcher | To list apps you can choose to watch. Preyu does not use QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES. |
Preyu does not request access to your location, camera, microphone, contacts, call logs, SMS, photos, files, calendar, accounts or accessibility services.
You can revoke any permission at any time in Android Settings. Some features stop working without the related permission (for example, without usage access Preyu cannot count time).
5. Your rights and choices
- Turn off analytics: Settings → Privacy → "Share anonymous usage stats".
- Turn off news and tips: disable the "Updates & tips" notification category.
- Pause the companion: turn the companion off in Preyu's Settings, or use "Quiet 1h".
- Delete on-device data: uninstall Preyu, or clear its storage in Android Settings.
- Analytics data already sent: it is anonymous and deleted automatically after 2 months. Because Preyu has no accounts, we cannot tell which analytics data belongs to you; switching analytics off stops any further collection, and uninstalling Preyu resets the app-instance identifier. For any other request, contact us at the email below.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU/EEA, the UK, California, or India under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or object to processing of personal data. Contact us to use them; we will respond within 30 days. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
Legal basis (EU/UK GDPR): we process on-device data to provide the service you asked for (performance of a contract), and anonymous analytics and messaging on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping the app working and improving it. You can object at any time by switching these off as described above.
6. Children's privacy
Preyu is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Preyu does not ask for any personal information from anyone. If you have concerns about a child's use of Preyu, contact us.
7. International transfers
Firebase is operated by Google LLC, which may process anonymous analytics and messaging data in the United States and other countries where Google operates. Google uses appropriate safeguards for such transfers, such as Standard Contractual Clauses. See Firebase privacy information.
8. Data security
On-device data is stored in Preyu's private app storage, which other apps cannot read, and is excluded from backups. Data sent to Firebase is encrypted in transit. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we keep the data we handle to the minimum the app needs.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the app changes, for example if we add a feature that uses new data. The new version will be posted at this same address with a new "Last updated" date. For significant changes, we will also tell you in the app or in the Google Play release notes.
